Fright Night Earns $400K on Thursday Night

Craig Gillespie's 3D vampire pic stars Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, David Tennant and Toni Collette.
Craig Gillespie’s campy 3D remake Fright Night — starring Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin and David Tennant — grossed a muted $400,000 in 9 p.m. and midnight shows as it opened at the domestic box office Thursday evening.

However, the performance was in line with expectations, since tracking for the vampire pic has been relatively soft. Disney, which is distributing Fright Night for DreamWorks, is projecting a weekend opening in the low to mid teens.

Fright Night also stars Toni Collette and tells the story of a teenager (Yelchin) who discovers a vampire (Farrell) has moved in next door, and enlists the help of a vampire hunter (Tennant).

Entertainment software industry boosts Utah's economic growth, report says

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's entertainment software sector has grown about six times as fast as the state's economy as a whole over the past five years, according to a national report released Tuesday.

Annual growth in Utah's electronic game industry has been almost 15 percent since 2005, according to the report from the Entertainment Software Association.

Game publishers and developers added about $91 million to the state's economy in 2009, the report said.

The news comes on the heels of multiple technology firms' request for state tax breaks and other incentives similar to those received by the film industry.

Otherwise, fledgling companies may be lured to places like Texas or even outside the country for more favorable conditions, said Clark Stacey, Smart Bomb Interactive vice president of business development.

Software publishers and developers in Utah filled about 650 full-time jobs in 2009, with an average pay around $83,000 per year, according to the ESA report. Together, the workers accounted for $106 million in direct and indirect compensation.

Utah is one of 34 states with high concentrations of game developers and publishers, according to the ESA report. Nationally, the computer and video game software industry added $4.9 billion to the U.S. economy in 2009.

Data for the report was derived from public sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau and privately-owned databases such as the one found on www.gamedevmap.com. That site listed 11 Utah companies that participate in game creation and publishing, including Electronic Arts Salt Lake, which just relocated to downtown Salt Lake City; Avalanche Software; Ninjabee; and Smart Bomb, which just released a 3-D game featuring the "Peanuts" character Snoopy.

The national report found that California is the largest employer of computer and video game personnel in the nation, providing more than $2.6 billion in direct and indirect compensation to the Golden State in 2009. Texas came in second, with about 13,500 employees, while New York, Massachusetts and Illinois rounded out the top five.

New Immortals Trailer

A new trailer for Tarsem’s Immortals has been released. It gets really pretty at 1:45 and ends on an epic Inception

There have been two trailers for Immortals, and they were a little disappointing, but this new trailer is a great improvement. The stilted acting isn’t foregrounded as much as it was in previous promos – a lot of people will be paying close attention to how well Henry Cavill (playing Theseus) anchors the movie, as we’ll soon be seeing him play Clark Kent/Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel – and although there’s a crapton of CGI we get a better look at some of the gorgeous sets and costumes.

How does it look to you, and how do you think audiences will respond? Clash of the Titans wasn’t received too well…

BRITNEY SPEARS GIVES PAULY D ON-STAGE LAP DANCE

Spears, 29, summoned Pauly D, who is also her tour deejay, to the stage during the Circus track ‘Leather and Lace’, and he was handcuffed to a pole in the back of a pink Mini Cooper and surrounded by half-naked dancers.
She then wrapped him in a pink feather boa and proceeded to climb
behind him and dance seductively while her dancers flanked him and did their own grinding.
An excited Pauly D took to his Twitter page and tweeted about the event as soon as it happened. “Wow Just Got A Lap Dance On Stage From @britneyspears!!!” the New York Daily News quoted him as writing.
Even Spears seemed pleased with the turnout, and she let Pauly D know about it. “Hope you enjoyed your dance! Was tough getting my legs around that big blowout,” she wrote.

Sex And The City is coming back for another TV series!

It’s been a good and bad week for fans of some of the girliest films and TV shows around. There’s going to be a Dirty Dancing remake (don’t mess with perfection, we say), while production company Working Title have confirmed they are making a third Bridget Jones movie (mmmm, Mark Darcy).

Now we’re hearing rumours that Sex And The City is coming back, but not for a third movie – there’s going to be another series on TV.

“Ultimately Darren Star – the man who created the hit series – will have the overall say, but everyone is agreed a TV show is the direction they want to take the franchise in,” a blabbermouth told The Mail.

“Sarah Jessica Parker will be producing. She was worried about doing another film after the bad reaction to the SATC2 movie, but a TV show is definitely something she wants to happen.”

It was thought that work was well underway ona third film in the SATC franchise, focusing on the early lives of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. There was evengossip that Blake Lively and Emma Roberts were attached to the project. But, says the source, “they want to make the TV series.”

We’re not clear if the original SATC gang – that’s Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Catrall, Kristina Davis and Cynthia Nixon – will return for the new series, or if the new show will focus on the girls when they first arrived in New York. We like the idea of seeing the old gang back again, but we also like the idea of a new generation bringing our favourite Manhattan ladies back to the small screen – what do YOU like the idea of….?

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would get married

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have never made marriage a priority. But that could change with a request from a few special people.

'I think it would be hard to say no to the kids,' Angelina, 35, said on Monday morning on ABC's Good Morning America.

But so far, it hasn't been an issue, as none of their six children seem to think it's a priority, either.

'They're not asking,' Angelina says. 'They are very aware that nothing's missing.'

Angelina, who stars in the new spy thriller Salt, touches on other aspects of her family in the interview, including whether it will get any larger. She and Brad, 46, are torn about the issue - drawn to the idea of it, yet dreading how it would stretch them even thinner.

'We always have this thing, first thing in the morning, where we're really, really tired, and we look at each other and we wonder, are we ever going to get sleep?' the actress says.

'And yet we still love the idea of having more children.'

Offering a glimpse into their daily routine, Angelina says she's better at disciplining the girls, while Brad is better at disciplining the boys.

'I think girls and Daddy can just bat their eyes,' she says. 'And the boys, funnily enough, can kind of get me.'

She also describes the pandemonium of the Jolie-Pitts at breakfast time.

'We're like bartenders. We're like waiters,' she says of herself and her actor-partner.

'But we still, I think, are able to do it because we manage to have a great laugh. We do it together, and we find fun in it, and because of that, it doesn't matter if you don't get sleep.

'It's an honor to take care of them.'

On the subject of love, Angelina is asked if Brad is the love of her life - and if there is indeed one true love for anyone.

'He makes me feel like there is,' she replies.

Asked if they'll grow old together, she doesn't hesitate.

'Of course,' she says. 'We wouldn't have six children if we weren't absolutely sure of that.'

Reviews: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

There are no eye-rolling pauses to stare at this new magical prop or that extra-special special effect. No time for time-killing Quidditch matches.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" is a film of actors in close-up. The lead players have grown into the roles and the Who’s Who of British character actors in supporting parts shine like never before, placed, as they are, in both real-world London and a selection of desolate landscapes that match the gloom of this apocalyptic tale.
Alternately funny and touching, it’s the best film in the series, an "Empire Strikes Back" for these wizards and their wizarding world. And those effects? They’re so special you don’t notice them. The digital elves are the most lifelike the movies have ever seen.
In a hellfire and brimstone opening, the head of the Ministry of Magic (Bill Nighy) roars that "our world has faced no greater threat." The forces of" You Know Who" have seized this and infiltrated that. The Hogwarts trio have gone into hiding, protecting their families as best they can. When Hermione (Emma Watson) movingly whispers "obliviate" and removes any memory of her from her family, her image fading from photographs as she sadly covers her tracks, we realize the stakes. And when we see Voldemort’s brain trust meet and torture a random Hogwarts teacher, the blood tells us this will be the darkest and most violent Potter film yet.
Spirited chases with Death Eaters and "snatchers," cut like a real action film, break up Harry, Hermione and Ron Weasley’s search for "Horcruxes," the evil talismans they must destroy on "The Chosen One’s" way to his date with destiny — aka battle with You Know Who.
Daniel Radcliffe (Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron) and Watson, seeing the finish line of this movie marathon, fully invest in the characters again. Supporting players such as David Thewlis (Remus Lupin) Rhys Ifans (as Luna’s dad, Xenophilius Lovegood) and Helena Bonham-Carter — more devilish than ever as Bellatrix Lestrange — stand out.
And when the characters, as they sometimes do, disguise themselves in the bodies of others to sneak into The Ministry, David O’Hara gives a deliriously spot-on physical imitation of Radcliffe, mocking his slant-shouldered shuffling walk to a T.
Director David Yates, overwhelmed by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" after a career doing smart miniseries for British TV ("State of Play"), finds firmer footing here. The script (by Steven Kloves) is peppered with trivia — little bits of the history we’ve seen in the six preceding films. Even taking a few moments to tell us (with stark, stylized animation) what the Deathly Hallows are doesn’t interrupt the pace he’s set.
The first third is brisk and witty, the middle third gloomy and the finale not so much a cliffhanger as a grim, inspiring tease, a masterly build-up to put "I can’t wait for Part 2" on every Muggles’ lips.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 1
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Ralph Fiennes, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rupert Grint, Rhys Ifans, Brendan Gleeson
Director: David Yates
Running time: 2 hours, 19 minutes
Rating: PG-13 for some sequences of intense action violence, frightening images and brief sensuality.
